Project Governance and Integration in the Public Sector

Project governance is an important responsibility for many public sector and government employees, as more organizations are using project team-based methods. As such, workforce development is needed to meet the growing needs of project coordinators in the public sector. This course provides the opportunity to develop substantial project governig skills that are specific to the public sector. The course is designed for public sector employees who want to improve both hard and soft project management skills.

The ever-growing demand for government services and the complexity of today's public policy challenges make capable project governance a critical skill for public sector professionals. Modern government agencies and related institutions increasingly employ integrated, matrixed, team-based approaches for projects such as the development and implementation of government-wide policies, change initiatives, programs, and the monitoring of agency performance.

 Effective project governance principles and skills will prove to be invaluable tools for professionals charged with managing these types of important projects within the challenging public sector environment.
This course provides the opportunity to develop practical project delivery skills specific to the public sector. The course will use case studies and other materials to explore tactics proven effective in addressing these complexities. 
Course participants will utilize a variety of resources including the examination of recognized best practices, templates, and frameworks helpful in effectively impacting long- and short-term program success.

Course Objectives:


•    Develop knowledge of the main tasks performed by project managers to initiate, plan, execute, monitor, lead, control, and successfully close projects with a specific focus on how these are applied in the public sector.
•    Develop time management and scheduling skills and for project managers.
•    Learn how to successfully manage and integrate cross-functional project teams.
•    Practice the application of learned project management skills using “real-world” scenarios and case studies.
•    Develop an understanding of the unique challenges presented by public sector projects; with an emphasis on management, risk mitigation, boundaries/constraints, and solution-focused results.

Why this course

This course will explore aspects of managing projects and navigating the challenges of project management and delivery within the public sector. It will provide the project manager with an understanding of the public sector overall, as well as the processes, challenges and constraints which influence project management and delivery models within the public sector. The student will explore key topics such as; government structures and elections; project management frameworks and regulations (e.g. access to information, broader public sector procurement directive); drivers of public sector projects and the not-for-profit sector; project governance, stakeholder management, communications and project funding models (public-private-partnerships, alternative financing and procurement, etc.). The course is intended for project managers within private sector entities doing business with public sector organizations and for project managers currently employed or intending to seek employment within the public sector.

To enable learners to align project planning components and to integrate these into a single overall project management plan for a simple to moderately a complex project.
